Rochdale

A town with no shortage of barbers. He didn't open another one.

Rochdale does not need more barbershops. Walk any stretch of it and you'll pass three, maybe four: poles turning, chairs full, prices in the window. The trade is not underserved here. It is saturated.

Which is why, in March 2020, the obvious move was not the one that was taken.

The shops had closed that week. A twenty-year-old with a pair of clippers his mum had once used on him started knocking on doors instead: cutting hair in kitchens and back rooms for a town that had suddenly run out of places to get it. Not because a mobile round was clever. Because there was nothing else.

What began as the only option turned out to be the better one.

Six years on there is still no shop, and that is deliberate. A shop asks you to find parking, take a ticket, and sit in a queue for a service you could have had at your own kitchen table. In a town with a barbershop on every other corner, the thing genuinely worth having isn't another chair. It's not having to go to one.

Rochdale is what brought this business alive.

Rochdale is where this started, and it is still where most weeks begin. Same clippers-in-a-drawer beginning, same doors, many of the same clients, six years older, and still not going anywhere.

What it actually looks like

You pick a time, he comes to you. A chair somewhere with a bit of light and a socket in reach is all that's needed. The kitchen is the usual one. Everything else arrives with him. He brings something to catch most of the cut hair; the sweep-up afterwards is yours.

The time you book is an arrival window rather than an exact minute, because a mobile round moves with the traffic and pretending otherwise would just be a lie told politely. Pay by card online or cash on the day. Change or cancel free any time more than 12 hours ahead.

Haircuts, beard trims, or both together. Prices are set by area and shown before you book: no quote to chase, and no surprise at the door.

Also covering Norden and Bamford.
